English & logic, reason to be in BITS

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (Bits) has included English and Logical Reasoning in its entrance exam. Until now, admission to the premier institute was based on marks scored in the plus-two examination.

This system is being dropped from this year and an entrance test, to be written online, similar to GRE will take its place. Students will be tested on physics, chemistry and maths, besides English and Logical Reasoning.

The test will be known as the Bits Admission Test, in short, Bitsat. It will be a objective multiple-choice examination conducted online at nine cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

There number of test centres may be increased to 20 in the near future. The test will be of three hours' duration and the number of questions will be 150 or 200. "A final decision on the number of questions and their distribution among the test subjects will be taken by a committee", Bits dean for admissions and placements Prof.G Raghurama told The Times of India on the phone from Pilani. Students who have secured an aggregate of 80 per cent or more in maths, or physics and chemistry --and at least 60 per cent in each of these subjects -- in Intermediate second year are eligible to apply for the exam

"Most of the plus-two boards state the aggregate of marks scored in all subjects taken by the student. If a student's plus-two class mark sheet includes marks obtained in class XI or earlier, only those obtained in mathematics, physics and chemistry in the Class XII examination will be considered for the purpose of calculating the aggregate," Raghurama said.
